40 years ago I was a member of a small touring motorcycle club called the "Eez-Alongs" from northern Lake county. We would regularly go to the motorcycle races at Santa Fe Speedway on Wednesday nights. Jan would see us sitting in the stands and would always announce that we were there, like it was a big deal. It kind of made us feel pretty special. He was a good man and the world is a poorer place now that he is gone.

God Bless You Mr. Gabriel, The angel's in Heaven now have the greatest voice in Racing. I remember hearing his voice on the TV when I was a kid and then I heard his voice at Santa Fe Speedway when my Uncle gentleman Jim raced in the Stock Car races and then I started racing in the spectator division on Demo night's and Jan's voice always added even more excitement to the races. I had the pleasure to talk with Mr. Gabriel on the phone about a year and a half ago and I was happy as a little kid in a candy shop when Jan answered the phone. I was not expecting him at all. I was calling to bring to the attention of somebody the fact that the Demolition Derby web site had a schedule error and we talked for about an hour about Santa Fe Speedway and some good times there. Before we ended our call Jan told me that the next time I look at the Demolition Derby web-site and I see the correction I could say I was the reason it was corrected. I Wish all the best in life for the Gabriel Family and I hope they keep the races going at the Route 66 Raceway.

This morning, I just found out of Mr. Gabriel's passing. While I now reside in Texas, I grew up in Whiting, Indiana and grew up hearing his battle cry on WGN and WFLD. I never did get to visit the track, but Jan Gabriel gave me the auto racing bug, just like he did thousands of other kids and grown-ups.
Why did it work so well? When Mr. Gabriel yelled "Sunday Sunday SUNDAY!!!", it was with a joy and true love of the sport that was infectious.
Thank you, Mr. Gabriel.

SO SORRY TO SEE THIS GREAT LEGEND GO, MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOUR FAMILY...... I RACED AT U.S 30 IN THE LATE 50'S THEN STARTED WHITE PIT STOP IN 1967.
WE ALWAYS SUPPORTED U.S. 30 WITH ADVERTISING AND SPECIAL EVENTS AND WILL NEVER FORGET THOSE FAMOUS SUNDAY...SUNDAY...SUNDAY RADIO COMMERCIALS OF JAN'S.
THIS STORY ESPECIALLY TOUCHES MY HEART AS MY SON DAVID WHITE HAS BEEN A BRITTLE DIABETIC SINCE HE WAS 9 YEARS OLD... WHEN HIS KIDNEYS FAILED I GAVE HIM ONE OF MINE JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN 1994 { BY THE WAY I WAS 54 YEARS OLD AT THAT TIME... ANYONE CAN DO THIS FOR A LOVED ONE EVEN IN YOUR 50'S AND 60'S AND IT WILL NOT EFFECT YOUR LIFE STANDARDS IN ANY WAY}.
I KNOW JAN WAS ON THE LIST FOR YEARS AND I FOLLOWED HIS STORY ALSO.
MY SON'S DAVID AND STEVE STILL HAVE WHITES PIT STOP, NOW CELEBRATING THEIR 44TH YEAR OF ONE OF A FEW NON- STOP TRUE SPEED SHOPS STILL GOING IN THE U.S.
DAVID HAS BEEN ON DIALYSIS FOR THREE YEARS NOW AND WAITING FOR A DOUBLE TRANSPLANT OF A ANOTHER KIDNEY AND ALSO A PANCREAS..... NEVER....NEVER....NEVER HAS HE GIVEN UP HOPE.
FOR ANYONE READING THIS BLOG WHITES PIT STOP IS NOW IN SCHERERVILLE, INDIANA AND WILL AGAIN THIS YEAR ON JULY 10TH HOST THE U.S.30 DRAGSTRIP REUNION WHERE THE GREAT JAN GABRIEL WILL CERTAINLY BE IN OUR THOUGHTS.

I was Jan Carter Gabriel's assistant producer for the Community Family Center television commercials way back in the mid/late 70's. I was a raw 22 year old young kid, fresh out of college and not knowing what the heck to do with my life in the business world. Working with Jan was probably the most fun I have ever had in the workforce. The crazy things that we used to do to get those 30 second TV spots on air will never be forgotten.
We always shot the commercials (Video-tape) at CBS Studios on McClurg Court in Chicago.
Jan was "extremely" creative and NEVER took NO for an answer.
He would always tell me, "If we come up with an idea, we ARE going to pull it off". And we ALWAYS did.
I still can't believe some of the things he would pull off with me always assisting him. An example of this was when we needed an airplane (indoors on the set) for a commercial. Jan talked Japan Airlines (JAL) into letting us use their huge replica of their plane that sat in the lobby of their downtown office. It must have measured about 25 ft. long. We rented a pick-up truck and Jan is the driver and I am riding on top of the plane down Michigan Avenue; like it was a horse, to hold it down as the wind was blowing like crazy. We had to get it to CBS and we did. We got a lot of crazy looks from people on the way there!
Jan and I promoted the Worlds 1st Indoor Motorcycle Race "On Ice" in the late 70's at the Randhurst Twin Ice Arena in Mount Prospect, Illinois (I don't think the place exists anymore). We had around 200 people show up as we were foolish enough to have it on the same day as the NFL Super Bowl game. We made no $$$$$ but had a great time putting it together.
There were many other memories; too many to write about.
Unfortunately, when I left Community Family Centers to join my wifes families business; we didn't communicate as much and then when I moved my family to Scottsdale, Arizona in the late 80's, we lost all contact. But I always thought about Jan and a few years ago, when visiting family back in Chicago - I got a chance to talk with Jan on the telephone.
I pray that Jan may rest-in-peace. I will never forget him.

Diane DeRome 2010/01/17 - 17:46
I fondly dubbed him "Jan the Man" while working at T.V. One, Inc., as Jan's Administrator and Syndicator for the "Super Chargers". He was an innovator, creator, and very, very humble about his lifelong disability. He was devoted to Amanda the moment she was born and thanks to Theresa, Jan was able to continue to live into the 21st century even with his disablity. Whenever I would call him to chat, I would open with "Jan the Man" and Jan would laugh and instantly know who he was speaking to...
I now live in Sarasota, Florida where we host the "Daytona" of Power Boat Racing. One day while I was visiting the dry pits I was telling a friend of Jan's first episode of the "Super Charges" where he filmed, Don Johnson, Walter Payton and Chuck Norris in a field of others on a day in the early 1980's on Lake Michigan. Jan had talked one of the helecoptor pilots into strapping video cameras onto the rails of the helecopter in order to get footage...and the "Super Chargers" was born. While I was reiterating the story I turned to look at the mega catamaran which was in the dry pits (and, which ultimately won the race that year) and noted with a smile that while I was speaking to my friend, the Capitan of the Catamaran had come up behind me to listen to my story of Jan's first episode of the "Super Chargers" in Chicago when he filmed Don Johnson, Walter Payton and Chuck Norris. I nodded to the Capitan and he nodded back to me with a twinkle in his eye as he turned back to his position at his vessel.
Good night Jan, sleep in peace, and you will be remembered in my prayers.

I was sorry to hear about the death Of Jan Gabriel.
Him and I go back to when I listened to him on WJOB 1230 am in Hammond, Indiana in the late 60s'. I turned him on instead of the Art Roberts show on WLS in Chicago.
I still often thought about Jan over the years nostalgically, and would run across him from time to time as he would reappear with all the other things he was doing after WJOB.
I remember tenderly the Geno's Drive-in commercials he did, "..at 667 Burnham Avenue in Calumet City !!!!" AND, would you believe I still remember all the words of that commercial? To this very day, I can repeat the commercial from memory. I used to record all my music off the radio in those days on reel-to-reel tape and could play the commercial back as often as I wanted to, and did! Many of those recordings have Jan as the disc jockey doing his thing on the show, announcing songs being played, doing other commercials, etc.
Jan was the kind of guy you hoped would always be around. I didn't always know that he was the voice of US 30, but when I did find out, I wasn't at all surprised.
There many more things I could say about Jan and what his memory will mean to this high school kid of the 60s'. I never forgot the fun I had while coming of age back then. I'm sure Jan would like to know he will be remembered by me and many other kids for the clean and encouraging way he went about helping us through school, and the lasting impression he left in so many of us so many years later.
Thank you, Jan. We missed you when you left the radio station, and we'll continue to miss you now. You always performed you services happily and completely And I look forward to the day we can meet again, over a microphone, and celebrate your life and what it meant to the many youngsters your life has touched over and over again over as many years, and the mark you left in so many ways!
God bless you, my friend.

We have lost another true legend of the local racing scene. Being a local race fan, we would go to all the local speedways. We heard the radio spots for the Drag Races. Our first visit to Santa Fe Speedway in 1970 was a surprise. The first thing we thought was, is that the same voice from the commercials? Sure enough...we eventually found out it was. We were asphalt fans, Waukegan Speedway, Raceway, Illiana, O'Hare...Santa Fe Speedway was "different". What brought us back was "that annoncer" who just added so much excitement to what could be an uneventful night. It was fun watching him "go crazy" in the infield and just listening to his voice!! I never met Mr. Gabriel, but sure enjoyed listening to him and his show. The only contact I had with him was a written request many years ago. Mr. Gabriel delivered a beautiul eulogy for Whitey Gerkin after Whitey he died from injuries at Illiana Speedway in 1973. On Sunday, October 21, 1973, there was a benefit race for Whitey at Rockford Speedway. Mr. Gabriel delivered a beautiful eulogy that I could not forget. I wrote to the Speedway to see if I could get a copy as I was a big Whitey Gerkin fan. 2 weeks later a copy of the eulogy arrived in the mail! The title was "The Total Racer...A eulogy composed and delivered by Mr. Jan Gabriel, Rockford Speedway, Sunday October 21, 1973". I still have the type written copy he sent. I took it out today to read. The final line was "God speed to William Whitey Gerkin". I am sure all of us who ever attended a race or listened to a commercial in the Chicago area in which Mr. Gabriel was involved can now wish the same for Mr. Gabriel. His love for the sport and its' people will surely be missed. My sincerest and deepest sympathy to all of his family and friends at this time.

Cameron Evans 2010/01/17 - 10:36 http://redlineoil.com I never met Jan Gabriel, but he and my father, drag racing announcer Steve Evans, were friends. When my father went to work on his collection of drag racing radio commercials called BE THERE!, Jan was one of the first people to contribute.
Jan was very gracious to donate his collection of drag racing radio commercials and my father greatly appreciated it. Jan knew that they would be in good hands and that BE THERE! would be a fitting presentation of the radio era that Jan helped to pioneer. The tapes and CDs are still floating around and those that own them, treasure them, as they understand the Americana that Jan and my father helped to create.
To Jan's family, our best wishes. He was a great man that led a great life.
Best regards, Cameron Evans

My condolences to Jan's family. I was fortunate enough to know him in high school. I actually got to ride in that cute little t-bird once or twice. Jan was friendly, funny, always smiling, even when every year he ended up on the roster of a girls gym class. When my husband was serving in Viet Nam and in the middle of some terrible fighting, I used to listen to Jan on the radio late at night while rocking my baby. It was a great comfort to hear a friendly and familiar voice and I wasn't as sad after listening to his broadcast. I hope everyone who reads this realizes that donating a kidney can save a lot of wonderful people. It was a sad day when I got the email telling of his death.

Jan baby you will be missed. Thanks for the inspiration you gave a high school kid in getting into radio. Also thanks for the time you helped a friend of mine work on his soap box derby car. First met Jan in the mid 1960's. Was a guest on his Up Tempo TV program and later I worked with him as one of the jocks on WJOB. Also followed in his footsteps as chief announcer at Santa Fe Speedway....he was there a dozen years, I was there for 7 until its closing in the mid 90's. I have many great memories of working with Jan and the friendship we shared. In recent years we communicated via e-mail. Its hard to imagine Jan is gone, but he'll never be forgotten. Someday I'd like to share stories from our radio days together and of some of the pranks we were involved in....ah the things I remember....Rest in Peace my friend, you've left a lasting impression and my sincere condolences to the family.....

Walter Rollenhagen 2010/01/14 - 06:43 http://www.myspace/Skipv91 NPR just reported to me the sad news of Jan's passing. I never was able to witness any of Jan's work first hand, but have heard his work as imitated by others including myself on radio stations down here in the South. That is just pure magic, lightening in a bottle if you will, that a rousing call to action can capture the imaginations of people all over the world. I now know that was just a small part of his life. There are some great statements as to the character of this man on this site.

Thanks for the memories, Jan!

I worked at WJOB many years ago. Jan was the night time pop DJ there. He was so good on the air. The kids loved him. Those of us fortunate to work at this community station were inspired by Jan's professionalism and humor. We remember his clever use of jingles like "let's draw another "45" and the funny traffic reports from the lovers lane section of Thornton Woods. This was good and clean radio unlike the junk that mostly dominates the airways today. Years later, Jan gave me
some good information about his life and career for the radio book that I was writing at the time "Valley Voices." I had long heard those "Sunday" spots but never knew that he was the annnouncer. My thoughts and prayers are with his family...

Michael Damiani 2010/01/12 - 16:20 http://www.madproductionsdmc.com It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I post this message on the passing of Jan C. Gabriel. I knew Jan from my early days in television as an editor with Polycom Teleproductions and later at Northwest Teleproductions as principle editor for "The Super Chargers" and later for the Nelson Brothers Television Commercials.
If there was one thing that could be said of Jan, and there were many ways to describe him, the way in which I remember him was energetic and generous. Jan helped shape me into the editor I became, always giving a lesson on how to approach a particular situation and acting as a de facto big Brother and sometimes, whether I needed or not and more often than not, a Father figure.
There are so many stories I would like to share with you and would love to be a part of his "Celebration of Life" party on January 17th @ noon at your residence.
If there is anything I can do to assist you in this most difficult time, please don't hesitate to contact me.
I would like to again express my deepest sympathies to you on the passing of Jan C. Gabriel.
Most Sincerely,
Michael Damiani

I grew up in N.W. Indiana. when I was 16 I would save up my allowance to go to US 30 Drag Strip "Drag Racing Capital of Chicagoland" (as Jan would say). My motivation to save so I could go, was to listen to his commercials on WLS AM Radio during the week. I recall him calling out "Big Daddy Don Garlits" and the Little Red Wagon. I remember Chris Caramansini (hope I spelled that right?) Too many to list, but Jan will be missed.
My sympathies to the Gabriel family and close friends.

Jan,
Before you became a legend in the world of racing you were a hero to those of us growing up in northwest Indiana through your evening show on WJOB. The jocks at WCFL and WLS held no interest for us, because you were better than all of them. From the Dedication Line to the Saturday night oldies show to all of the wacky things you used to do on the air, you had a captive audience of kids from all over the Region. Because of you and your infectious enthusiasm for broadcasting I have been involved in the radio biz for nearly 40 years now. Even tho some of the changes in radio over the years have not been for the better, it's still a joy to be in it, and I want to thank you so much for sparking my interest in it. I pray for God's total healing for your physical problems.

I was heartbroken but full of hope when I read of your struggle. I have faith the Good Lord will send you good news soon! And even though so many have said it before, you are one of my reasons for getting into Broadcasting. I am endeavoring now to make my name in Voice Over work. I did a v/o for a toy company, and I channeled your spirit to get the job done! If you'd like to hear it, let me know :)
THANK YOU SIR for all of the hard work you have put forth over the years!
I wish you peace and God Speed Jan!
Take Care,

Michael A. Damiani 2009/05/26 - 09:01 http://www.madproductionsdmc.com Dear Jan,
One of the greatest highlights in my life will always be my association with you and TV-One. Not only were you a client, but you were a mentor and most of all, a friend. Whether it was "The Super Chargers", "Nelson Brothers" or "Santa Fe Speedway", you brought your unique style and energy to the production and you always taught me your philosophy. One lesson, among many, that still sticks with me today, "If your going to do an effect, make it long enough that people can see it!, otherwise don't do the effect!"
Jan, I know we've lost contact in recent years, but my thoughts and prayers will be with you in these trying times. Please know that there are many of us that you have touched with your warmth and care and all of us in our own way, owe you our gratitude and thanks for the way you have enriched our lives.
My best to you Jan,
Your friend,
Michael

Hi Jan, Hope all is well with you, I found a Super Chargers badge you gave me years ago and I thought I would look you up on the net. As you know the old man checked out last year but he still makes an impression on us all. I keep in contact with Liz who is doing really well. I just wanted to give you warm greetings from Wales and to let you know that I enjoyed knowing you all those years ago.
All the best to you and take care
Jeremy.
PS. Like the tie.

Constantine 2009/04/13 - 22:57 westmts.ning.com Hey Jan!
I have been a hug fan of your announcing work since your piece on Return of The Monster Trucks as a little kid and I have to tell you that production made me into a huge monster truck fan to this day. I have also won awards for public speaking in college which I have to say I turned to some of my old tapes for pointers and your style of being on the edge of your seat and making anything sound exciting was a major influence In my public speaking career. Being respectful to another speaker as well as making a delivery everyone in the room will remember. I hope everything is going well for you and I wish they would still have you calling monster trucks to this day! It just isn't the same without you yelling side by side!
From your long time fan
-Dino

Jan, it was the pleasure of a lifetime to meet you in person at the World Of Wheels Motorsports Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony a couple of years ago. I grew up at Santa Fe Speedway and ALWAYS remembered hearing the "Sunday" "Sunday" US 30 commercials. I have worked with Ken Heinemann many times and have always praised the success of your accomplishments with The Super Chargers series. You are an amazing person with or without a microphone !! You have shown such courage, strength, and dedication in ALL that you do !! My thoughts and prayers are always with you and your family. Maybe we can get together again soon, maybe on a "Sunday" "Sunday" ! Best Wishes ALWAYS and may God keep you in His care. Sincerely, Mike.

Jan is one of the most incredible people I have ever known and has always been a great friend over the years. Jan, I hope you get the help you need...and soon. Much of what I've become I owe to you. You're one person well worth having in our world. Besides, you'll need at least another 20 years to finish recounting the 1000 outrageous (and real) life stories you began relating a decade ago. Jan, you're the best and always will be! Hey Teresa and Amanda!
Love,
Tom

Steve Cook 2008/12/20 - 16:19 http://www.michigan-dogman.com Jan -
It's an understatement to say you are an icon to me. As fellow announcer of nearly 30 years, I've employed many of the techniques you pioneered countless times in my work.
I first heard you when my brother was a racer at the old Martin Dragway, and you used to do the SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY ads for the Pop Rod Nationals. A LONG time ago!
While we've never met, I hope you'll accept my prayers and best wishes. God Bless you. Better days are ahead. I know your journey will continue to inspire.

Bob Dreher 2008/12/05 - 16:28 http://bobswelding.tripod.com/index.htm Jan, just found your site by searching for US30 video's on YouTube. I was one of those kids back in the 70's who heard your voice and shivers would go up my spine. I spent many Sundays at Smokin US30. I am now fortunate enough to build drag cars for a living. God bless you and I pray you get a kidney soon.

Mrs Gardner
Jan & Theresa,
Wishing you both the best of luck with your donor process I am well aware
of the kindness of others to help out in time's of need since my son one, of your Bees has Stage 5 Melanoma and SLE Lupus, he is doing well at this time his last surgery was in March of this year, if his melanoma shows it's self in an area that we can not get to (he has no treatment options left) we have already done the interferon and he is not a candidate for any trials due to his SLE Lupus.
Prayers are being sent your way as prayers were sent my way...
May God Be With You.
Take care,
Mother of the main Bee

One cadaver in 1988 then my sister donated to me in 2000 and finally her daughter donated to me last August. I understand what you are going though. It has been a rough time for you as I can imagine. I would like to encourage you. I will pray you find a donor soon. I thank God for everyone who will help you. I would like to also say. I enjoyed you as a boy at Santa Fee in the sixtys. You and the US 30 dragway comercials touched both of my passions...cars and radio. Thank you for being an important part of my life. Bob Vizza (prodounce like pizza)

Tami Kidd-Brown
http://www.fullcircle.bz Hey Jan, great website!
Can you believe it's been 10 years that we have been working together now? You are an awesome man and a force to reckon with. You have more spunk and drive than anyone I know. While I am not a candidate for Kidney donation, I will spread the word about your need and I am confident that you will have a new spare part waiting in the "Pit" for your crew to install in no time. Until that time, know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Warmest regards and best wishes,
Tami
